‘Islands’ was inspired by the dichotomy of my lineage, and is an exploration of personal history. On my father’s side, generations of New Zealand sheep farmers clothed themselves in work gear, tried and tested for the elements. My mother, however, was a vision: wrapped in a sarong, wreathed in big smiles, and crowned by flowers in her hair.
They met on a blind date in the 1960s, and the rest is history. This is a story of first cars, first homes, large families, barbecues, and suburban dreams.
‘Islands’ was created in partnership with Australian Wool Innovation (Woolmark) through the Honors year grants program. The collection combines traditional Polynesian textile design executed with modern technologies like laser cutting and bonding, all on a wool base.
Zoe Ellis is a designer with a focus on innovative textiles and silhouette. She was born in London, grew up in Auckland, studied in Sydney and currently resides in New York.
Zoe finished her Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Hons) at the University of Technology Sydney in 2015. Inspired by her experiences as a migrant and nostalgia of home, Zoe explored her Pacific heritage through her graduate collection Islands.
